One of the great things about the YMCA, other than the free childcare, is the afternoon youth classes (also free!) that they offer. A couple weeks ago Catcher joined a cooking class where they made kale chips. I have to admit that at first kale chips sounded like a fancy way of saying "Here's something healthy that your kids will never eat, so we put the word 'chips' in there to try and trick them," but they were really good. And really easy to make. Catcher and I cooked up a batch yesterday.
Step 1: Tear the leafy green part off the stem in "chip size" and place in bowl.
Catcher was particular about his chip size.
Warning: do not taste the raw kale. It looks all pretty and green and leafy sitting in the bowl, but it doesn't taste quite so pretty.
Step 2: Drizzle olive oil and sprinkle salt and pepper over the kale and mix in bowl until everything is well covered.
Step 3: Layer kale on baking sheet (make sure none of the pieces are on top of one another, per Catcher's instructions) and bake for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees. The kale will shrink up a little bit, but you don't want it to get too brown and crunchy looking.
Step 4: Take the chips out of the oven and devour their salty deliciousness. This is the only picture of the finished product I have because we seriously finished the entire batch in less than two minutes. Scout was napping and didn't even get to try them, but Catcher assured me that "She probably wouldn't like the kale chips because she's younger."
