lesson in lexicon

Scout has mastered her first word: quack. In fact, she's mastered it so well that she quacks at ducks, which sometimes respond, and also birds and dogs and any animal she sees on the TV. She also quacks when she's finished with dinner or just wants to get your attention in general. She gets a laugh out of us every time, so I guess that's why she keeps doing it. The funny thing about her first word is that it reminds me of how excited you are to hear your child speak for the first time. It's a miracle watching language develop, and somewhere between calling a phone a "pone" and the TV the "ri-ri," you start to mimic your child's speaking until you find yourself in an adult setting explaining why you said "monies" instead of money. Although you may sound ridiculous at times, you encourage their language because you can't wait to hear what's next.

Fast forward two years...

...and you have a three year-old who's favorite phrase is "'cause why?" and who asks you at 5:23 in the morning what nipples are for (true story). But after a long day of exhausting questions, at least I can get a  chuckle out of the words unique to Catcher:

- hairplane = airplane
- ga-nilla = vanilla
- Glue's Clues = Blue's Clues
- freh-mote = remote
- ga-noculars = binoculars
- golf park = golf cart
- Chee-yos = Cheerios
- Honey Bees = Honey Nut Cheerios
